Fireman Entrepreneur Award Builds Momentum Ahead of 2026 Announcement in Chicago

The Bob Fireman Entrepreneur of the Year Award will return next month when MariMed and IgniteIt present the 2026 honor at the Cannabis Capital Conference in Chicago on June 15. Created in 2023 to recognize cannabis leaders who reflect the entrepreneurial spirit and advocacy of MariMed co‑founder and longtime CEO Bob Fireman, the award has quickly become a fixture at IgniteIt’s flagship annual event.

Fireman, who died in 2022, was remembered by the company as a pioneering attorney and early architect of the regulated cannabis industry. Now in its fourth year, the award was established to honor executives who demonstrate the same combination of ingenuity, integrity, and commitment to expanding access to legal cannabis that defined Fireman’s career.

During an online interview with IgniteIt, MariMed’s chief communications officer, Howard Schacter, said the award remains a meaningful way for the company to celebrate Fireman’s legacy.

“Bob was a serial entrepreneur and attorney who became a pioneer and a visionary of the legal cannabis industry,” Schacter said. “He loved going to [the Chicago] conference in particular, loved meeting with other entrepreneurs and advocates, and so it was just a really meaningful way to honor his legacy for the company.”

How The Award Works

Each year, MariMed gathers nominations from across the industry, including outreach on its own channels and in collaboration with IgniteIt. Schacter said the company also solicits suggestions from partners and colleagues.

“We cobble together that exhaustive list, and we go through it as a management team and land on the winner we think best exemplifies what we are trying to do with the award,” he said.

The criteria for the Bob Fireman Entrepreneur of the Year Award have remained consistent since the inaugural year. The award is presented to an executive who embodies Fireman’s entrepreneurial drive, business success, and advocacy for cannabis reform.

“We do a ton of due diligence and vetting to land on that executive each year that we think embodies all of those traits the most appropriately,” Schacter said.

Previous Honorees

The first Fireman Award was presented in 2023 to Shanel Lindsay, founder of Ardent Life and a longtime advocate for patient access and cannabis reform. In 2024, the honor went to Loriel Alegrete, CEO and founder of 40 Tons, recognized for her work at the intersection of cannabis, criminal justice, and community empowerment. Last year’s award went to Vladimir Bautista, co‑founder of Happy Munkey and a prominent voice for New York’s growing legal market.

Schacter said each recipient has reflected the values the award was created to highlight.

“All of them have been successful entrepreneurs in their own right, who made a go of it on their own with very little support from outsiders, but also passionately fight for legal access and the federal reform that we have all been working for in this industry,” he said.

Looking Ahead To Chicago

Interest in the award has grown steadily, Schacter noted, with more industry leaders asking about it each year. He said MariMed hopes the recognition continues to encourage values‑driven leadership.

“If we could use this award in some way to represent both our mission and what Bob stood for, while also encouraging others to do the same, then great,” he said.

With the 2026 announcement set for June 15 in Chicago, anticipation is building across the industry. The Fireman Award has become a moment to spotlight entrepreneurs who combine business success with meaningful advocacy, and the growing attention around the honor reflects how deeply those values resonate. As the conference approaches, operators, advocates, and past nominees are watching closely to see who will carry the legacy forward this year.
