Is “Nano” Enough to Sell a Better Cannabis Gummy? Azuca Says No

Nano has become a popular shorthand for fast-acting edibles. Azuca argues that gummy makers need to look beyond particle size to taste, production, and shelf life.

A small droplet on a supplier’s spec sheet does not guarantee a good gummy. That is the central argument in a new white paper from Azuca, which challenges manufacturers to judge infusion systems by how the finished product performs.

The distinction matters on the production line. Azuca says water-based emulsions can affect a gummy’s texture and drying time when added to a recipe. Surfactants used to keep an emulsion stable may affect flavor, while an infusion that performs well in a bottle may behave differently after cooking, packaging, and months on a shelf.

For brands, those are business questions as much as formulation questions. A delivery system that adds production steps, reduces yield or requires extra work to mask its taste can raise costs. A gummy that changes over its shelf life can also make it harder to earn repeat purchases.

Azuca points to a blind comparison of its TiME INFUSION gummy and a nano-emulsion gummy in the same flavor and dose. According to the company, 86% of participants rated the Azuca gummy’s taste good or very good, versus 60% for the comparison product. Azuca also says its gummy scored higher on texture, overall liking, and purchase intent.

The results come from research presented by Azuca, the company behind TiME INFUSION®. Readers can find the study data, panel information, methodological details, and supporting research on Azuca’s Clinical and Consumer Data page.

“Particle size can matter, but it is not the determining variable for gummy quality,” said Azuca CEO and co-founder Kim Sanchez Rael in a press release. Her proposed test is more practical: Does the infusion work in the recipe, run efficiently through production, and deliver a consistent experience that brings customers back?

For edible makers comparing suppliers, that question may be more useful than any single “nano” claim.
